- The diamond cut is the way the raw diamond is shaped and polished, how deep is the raw diamond cut and how the facets are arranged.

Various cuts of diamonds are available and many of them patented. Even diamonds with a similar shape can vary how the facet are cut and arranged. One example are Asscher and Princess diamonds, they are square shaped diamonds but with a different facet arrangements.

How the crystal molecules of the diamond are arranged will determine the shape and cutting of the diamond. If the molecules are arranged in an octahedron fashion, it will be cut as a round diamond. Often, two round brilliants
can be cut from the same original crystal. If the crystal molecules are arranged in a macer configuration, the diamond is cut as marquise or oval diamond.

There are several different types of diamond cuttings. Emerald shaped diamond have a rectangle cut. If the diamond is not clear enough, an emerald cutting can cause the diamond to appear cloudy. In comparing to the emerald cutting, another similar diamond is the Asscher diamond. It is a square cutting and looks like a spider web when viewed from above.

Diamond cut like pear-shaped or tear-shaped is self-explanatory. This diamond is a perfect oval that's wider at one end and curves to a point at the other end. Another different cutting is the marquise cut, which can maximize the weight of a stone with a flatter cut, yet the diamond is highly faceted. The marquise diamond comes in a variety of length-to-width ratios.
Many stones have rounded or cut-off corners because a diamond can chip or scratch when crashed against something. How diamonds are cut is something special.

The modern round cut brilliant stone has 58 facets, or 57 if the tiny bottom facet, the culet, is omitted. A unique exception is the Princess cut, which is a square diamond with pointed corners.

When people think about diamond cut they usually think of the different kinds of diamond shapes they've seen with diamond jewelry, the princess cut, the round brilliant cut and so on. But diamond cut refers to other parameter, usually how well a diamond cutter has done his job to achieve maximum carat size and brilliance, or the millions of glittering sparkles you can see when you turn your diamond in the light. A diamond is the right anniversary gift in any case.

Poorly cut diamonds will often sell at a cheaper rate than the better cut. Interestingly most of diamonds aren't cut for optimum brilliance. There are four factors involved in the diamond cut, proportion, finish, symmetry and polish

The proportion of the diamond cut has to do with the table percentage relative to the depth percentage. The table is the flat surface on the top of each kind of diamond cut, while the depth has to do with the width of the diamond from top to bottom. A excellent table to depth ratio will allow all light coming into the diamond to be reflected back through the surface.

The symmetry of a cut diamond is how good the facets of a diamond match up. If the facets don't match properly then light entering the diamond will leak out the sides and not be properly reflected to the surface, classifications
of diamond cut symmetry are the same as for polish.

The polish of a diamond refers to how finally polished the surface is to make it very reflective. Diamonds are the hardest materials on earth and they must be polished using diamond grit, so the process is time consuming. The grades for polish range from Ideal to Excellent, Very good, Good, Poor and Fair.

A diamond's finish is made up of the individual diamonds polish and symmetry. If a diamond cut finish is very good it means polish and symmetry of the diamond are very good.

Asscher Cut Diamonds are nearly identical to emerald cut diamonds and they are often referred to as a square emerald cut.

Joseph Asscher an eminent diamond cutter, who cut the 3,106 carat Cullinan diamond, developed and patented the Asscher cut diamond in 1902.

This shape of diamond has a square step cut with an almost octagonal outline and distinctive windmill reflection plus wide cut corners that are characterized by concentric square patterns. The Asscher cut diamond has a small table, a high crown, wide step facets, a deep pavilion and square culet.

An Asscher shape diamond is cut with several parallel steps, creating a hall-of-mirrors effect when looking deeply into the stone. These steps create more internal refraction and diamond fire than typical step cut stones, such as the elongated emerald cut. Because of its high crown and small table, it has more light and fire than an emerald cut diamond.

Asscher cut diamonds became very popular in Art Deco jewelry and was a forerunner of the emerald cut.

Because this cut of diamond produces more fire than you see in a typical step cut diamond it has become extremely popular especially with many Hollywood stars and celebrities.

Some of the most beautiful and stunning famous diamonds in the world are Asscher and princess cut diamonds - the 54.04ct D color Porter Rhodes diamond and the flawless D color Graff Asscher Cut Diamond which weighs 21.46cts are both great examples.

If you choose a SI-clarity graded Asscher cut diamond be sure to view the clarity plot on the diamond certificate, because this shape can highlight the clarity of the diamond. When choosing this shape diamond you also should consider the color

grade, for colors below J-color, in various fancy-shaped diamonds the color may be slightly visible in its corners.

The optimum shape for an Asscher cut diamond has a Length to Width ratio of 1:1, acceptable length to width ratios can be 1.00 - 1.40: 1 depending on the shape of the diamond you desire, noting that the greater length to width ratio the more rectangular in shape the diamond will become.

A square radiant cut diamond is another excellent square shape diamond to be considered.
